FAQ

Do the apprentices have to be paid?

As part of a Registered Apprenticeship, apprentices must be paid during any time spent completing the On-the-Job Training (OJT) or clinical component of the program.  The wage is determined solely by the employer, but must be in compliance with all federal, state and local minimum wage laws, as well as adhere to any requirements laid out in a Collective Bargaining Agreement (if applicable).

Apprentices do not need to be paid for the time spent completing the online Related Technical Instruction, though employers may choose to do so if they want.

How often are new start dates offered?  Are there minimum or maximum cohort sizes?

Utilizing an online platform for the Related Technical Instruction allows for maximum flexibility with start dates and cohort sizes.  New apprentices can begin at any time and there is no minimum or maximum number.  IWP has had employer partners who started only one apprentice at a time and others who have large groups ranging all the way up to 50+.

Apprenticeship is an employer-driven model and, as such, program designs can be individually structured to meet the needs of each partner.

What happens if an apprentice is not showing satisfactory progress or does not successfully complete the program?

Employer partners are under no obligation to keep any apprentices employed or in the program who are not meeting the minimum benchmarks set forth in the program schedule provided upon enrollment.  Continued employment or participation in the program is at the sole discretion of the employer.

If an apprentice is terminated (or chooses to drop out voluntarily), IWP offers prorated credits or refunds for any apprentice who exits the program within 90 days of their start.  Please reach out to schedule an appointment for more specific information.

What are the administrative requirements expected of the employer partners?

Employers who do not wish to register/sponsor their own programs are welcome to sign an Employer Acceptance Agreement with IWP.  For those who do so, the only aspect of the program that they will need to manage is ensuring their apprentices are trained on the clinical competencies.  A copy of the completed and signed clinical skills checklist must be submitted prior to the apprentices obtaining their national certification.

All other administrative aspects of the program are the responsibility of IWP.
